Iredell Christian Ministries Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
Iredell Christian Ministries

Jenbnifer McLain* - National American Miss North Carolina  Pre Teen

Total Time Served* - 10 hours

I met with Mrs. Natalie Rickabaugh, Executive Director of Iredell Christian Ministries, on October 26, 2011, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. to explore the possibility of planning a charity concert to benefit her organization. Mrs. Rickabaugh was very pleased with my idea to give a charity concert in order to raise money to help the poor in our community. I spent time touring the facility in order to learn all I could about her organization and how it operates. I wanted to know how the money I raised would be used to help others.

I called First Baptist Church to reserve the sanctuary for the concert to be held on Sunday, November 13, 2011.

I originally planned to give the benefit concert with my grandmother, Ms. Susan McLain, but later decided to include some vocalists to add variety to the program. I contacted some of my peers from the Junior Music Club, of which I am a member, and also Mrs. Melody Beaty who is the Junior Music Club Advisor to participate in the charity concert. I wanted to provide a venue for some of our most talented Junior Music Club Members to perform and also give them an opportunity to provide a service to our local community. I also contacted Mrs. Michelle McMurray, soprano, and Ms. Doris Swaim, accompanist.

I printed flyers to advertise the event. I also collected all information to be listed and printed in the program.

The Charity Concert was held on November 13, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina. The concert was a huge success! The amount of money raised was $864.00 and was presented to Mrs. Rickabaugh at the conclusion of the program.

I have volunteered at the Sheriff's Office for many years. My duties included, but were not limited to, data entry, filing and answering phones. I have also volunteered at the Sheriff's Office Animal Shelter during events to assist with visitors and show the animals that are up for adoption. My favorite volunteer activity with the department has been to assist with the "Shop With a Cop" program where underpriveledged children are taken for a day of shopping for Christmas. The children purchase gifts for themselves and their family members and we help them wrap the presents before taking them home.

The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need, many who are waiting to be adopted. It is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and is celebrating 10 years in 2011. The North Alabama Chapter donates to organizations such as Harris Home for Children, a foster care institution and child placement agency. This is Mariah's second year hosting the program at the ice rink and it has been a success each year. Each guest received free admission for a pair of pajamas and a free pass for each book to return at another time to the ice rink. The younger girls really enjoy meeting a "real princess". Mariah reads to the kids and also ice skates with them. This helps children in need and also exposes others to figure skating, which is one of Mariah's favorite things to do.

My family and I decided to help people in our community that are not as fortunate as we are. We placed a flyer along with a trash bag, and a sticker into the mailboxes of our neighbors. The fyler asked for them to please fill the trash bags with gently used clothes and place the bag by their mailbox. They would then put the sticker on their box to show they wanted to help. We then went by and collected the donations and brought them to the United Way in Bryan County, GA. All together the community donated over 20 bags of clothes! The people of United Way were so happy! It felt so great to help others! We plan on having another drive in January to see if we can top the last amount!

Voorhees Center Assisted Living Center

IsabelAcevedo* - National American Miss New Jersey Miss

Total Time Served* 4 hours

I volunteered at Voorhees Center Assisted Living Center. I visit the residents on a regular basis and even made new friends. I go every Wednesday to assist with bingo night. I would hand out cards and chips. My main purpose there, which was so rewarding, was to help the physically or mentally disabled play bingo. Some of the residents cannot move their hands or mentally can't keep up with the letter/numbers. I would sit with a few of them and help them with their bingo cards. Sunday mornings, I helped with the coffee socials. We would set the tables, take their order and served them. There were also some people who needed help eating. It makes me feel good knowing I am helping the residents join in regular activites, socializing with them, and putting a smile on their faces.

Name of Organization or Cause *
Second Harvest Inland Northwest Food Bank

Tia Moua* - National American Miss Washingon  Jr Pre Teen

Total Time Served* - 5 hours

With about 200 other volunteers, my mom and I picked apples for five hours on November 5th during Second Harvest Inland Northwest’s annual fall harvest event. Our group, consisting of 25 volunteers, went to three different farms which are part of the Green Bluff Grower’s Association located about 18 miles northeast of Spokane, Washington. I picked apples into a 5-gallon bucket, then emptied the bucket into boxes which were dispersed everywhere in the orchard to make it easy for the volunteers. Many Golden Delicious apples were so large I had to use both hands just to grab hold to pick them! I also picked Red Delicious, Gala and MacIntosh apples. The event organizers estimated that 30,000 pounds of produce, mostly apples, were harvested which makes this year the best one yet!

Bailie JadeBishop* - National American Miss Mississippi  Princess

Total Time Served* - 20 hours

Bailie Jade decided to perform her community service at the Jones County Rest Home. Bailie Jade would go after school for 2 to 3 hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday's. During this time she would talk to the residents, help them play bingo, cards and board games. She would also put on shows. Bailie Jade would sing and dance and the residents loved every minute of it. She never acted like she was scared and loved interacting with the residents. She also would make art work for them to hang in their rooms. This was truly a great learning experience for Bailie Jade. Most the residents did not have family so they were thrilled to have someone take the time Bailie Jade did with them. Even though Bailie Jade was only required to perform 4 hours she preformed 20 and still goes 1 to 2 hours twice a week.

Emily's Smile Boxes Community Involvement!!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
Emily's Smile Boxes for Children's Medical Center

MaeganTodd* - National American Miss Texas Teen

Total Time Served* - 6 hours

Teaming up with my sister queens at Children's Medical Center to deliver 150 hand-decorated "Emily's Smile Boxes", full of crayons, coloring books, card games, and note pads was heartwarming. The Smile Boxes provide patients and their siblings hours of fun while they are in the hospital. Allowing myself to take it one step further, by actually playing in the play room, was not only courageous, it was inspirational and responsive.

As young adults, we often get lost in the vision of our future and fail to remember the memories of our past. The memories of being a child; full of wonder, and having an overwhelming amount of energy centered around play. Embracing play and being able to understand what it feels like to spend numerous hours in a hospital were not within my grasp. After visiting, it became clear this is a normal, every day life and feeling for many children and their families.

I met a 6-year old who instantly captured my attention. She is diagnosed with terminal cancer and spends weeks at a time in the hospital having radiation treatment. While language was a barrier, there was no denying our enjoyment of playing "princess" was rewarding for both of us. After our one-on-one princess dress up fun was over we created picture frames with all of the children in the play room. As I looked around the room, I saw constant smiles that reminded me how very fortunate I am. Their laughter continues to encourage me to be the light in a child's eyes. I left that day knowing I had made a difference. And, little did they know, they left a mark on my heart that I will cherish forever.

Ronald McDonald Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania

A'yasiaCherry* - National American Miss Pennsylvania Jr Teen

Total Time Served* - 4 hours

Recently I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey, Pennsylvania. This facility is a haven where family members of sick children at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Children’s Hospital live allowing them to be close to their child. This wonderful organization gives the families the ability to focus on the children, not having to worry about the extra expense of hotels. During my time at the house I had the opportunity to volunteer my services by helping with kitchen clean up and making sure that the living areas where tidy. Though this may seem like a small task to most, it means a lot to the people that stay in the house. I’m sure it’s a good feeling to be able to stay in a clean environment and to be able to relax in a positive home like atmosphere. I have learned that life is short and that you should be thankful for your family and good health. The families who utilize the Ronald McDonald house face challenges every day, not knowing if there child will make it to see tomorrow. Even with all that life has dealt to some of the families, the time I spent in the house I still saw smiling faces and heard laughter. This gave me a deeper appreciation of life and really makes one prioritize what’s important. I realize just how good life is and how blessed I am every day. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House was an eye opening and a life changing experience. I will never forget my time spent there or the people I got the chance to meet. I plan to go back in the near future to continuing serving the families and my community.

Petsmart People Saving Pets Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
PetSmart Charities People Saving Pets

Saarah Robetje* - National American Miss New Jersey Jr Teen

Total Time Served* - 6 hours

Pet Smart Charities is the fuel for the People Saving Pets movement. Pet Smart charity is the largest foundation of animal welfare in the United States! Every year four million animals that are put in shelters are euthanized. Euthanized means to put an animal down in a humane way. Although an animal dies in a “humane way the procedure does not excuse the fact that an animal has just passed. Out of eight million animals in shelters that makes up one HALF of the overall result! This percentage needs to be decreased immediately. People Saving Pets movement is dedicated to finding pets a home where they can live a healthy life and be saved from being euthanized. Now how was I inspired to participate in this movement? My friend had worked for Pet Smart Charities through an organization called Lifeline Rescue. The organization is located in Pet Smart and holds adoptions every Saturday and Sunday, also every other Friday. She said that the org anization needed help that certain weekend because they were low on volunteers. I could not have been more excited to help out! There I learned how to sanitize the cages of the animals, how to take care of them, and how to help a family adopt one of these precious creatures! I loved working with these incredible animals and I will continue to spread the word throughout my community about this organization! I am determined to create fliers and hold fundraisers, because money for the sheltered animals for shots and being properly spayed or neutered unfortunately does not grow on trees! I will continue to spread the awareness throughout my community because these rates cannot remain at fifty percent; my dream is to make them decrease to zero.

Huong Nguyen* - National American Miss New York Jr Teen

Total Time Served* -  5 hours

Having been an active volunteer for the American Red Cross for the past 2 years, I had the wonderful opportunity of assisting my local Red Cross in their annual Ride for the Red fundraiser event this summer on September 2nd and 3rd. At the 2-day event, I spent 5 hours of my time helping in various ways such as presenting a plaque in thanks to Wegmans Food Markets for being one of the Red Cross's most generous sponsors and helping with the clambake, vendors, and entertainments. I was able to bring awareness to my community by talking to several community members about the Red Cross and what the organization's mission is all about. Not only was this benefit a huge success in bringing the community together for a great cause, but we were able to raise a significant amount of funds to support the Red Cross. Events like Ride for the Red are essential in enabling my local Red Cross to provide for food pantries, blood services, disaster reliefs, and armed forces emergency services through out the year. Therefore, I take much honor in being able to be involved in such a fun event with the most dedicated volunteers of my community for the Red Cross, one of the leading humanitarian organizations of our nation.

"Prayer for the Sick"

Shina Mitchell* - National American Miss Maryland Jr Pre Teen

Total Time Served* - 8 hours

My grand-mother was diagnosed with cancer only 7 months ago. I didn't know exactly what that meant or what to do or how we all would deal with it but the 1st thing I do remember we did was pray.

I want to help others who have cancer to receive their healing like my grand-mother did so I went to my pastor, Rev. Dr. China M Ashe and I asked her to help me make a difference in the lives of those with cancer. She showed me how to pray and believe in God for the healing of the sick. We prayed 1 hour every Saturday for two months that God would heal every member of our church suffering with Cancer or whose loved ones, friends, or co-workers were suffering with Cancer. I asked God to "Heal By His Stripes" and we have heard testimonies each Sunday of miraculous healings.

September 11, 2001 is a day we will never forget. Many men and women lost their lives trying to save the innocent victims of a this terrorist attack on America. Police, fire and military men and women put their lives on the line everyday to protect us. They are our heroes and the event I was involved in was to honor them. Following this race was a festival that included members of the military, fire fighters and police officers. Proceeds from this event went to support 3 local charities that support these men and women and their families. It was an amazing day and I was honored to give my time to support my hometown heroes here in Colorado.

Hooked on Integrity Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
"Hooked On Integrity"

Rahmeka Cox* - National American Miss North CarolinaTeen

Total Hours Served* - 12 hours

I founded “Hooked on Integrity,” and copyrighted the children’s book to coincide with the platform in 2007. I continue to speak to several youth groups about the importance of honesty, integrity, respect and self-motivation. I visit local schools to promote character education through reading stories, engaging with children through arts and crafts, and having discussions with them. Attached are photos of me interacting with several students (ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade) from elementary schools in my hometown. I also attached a picture of the thank you cards that I received from Mrs. Fedo's kindergarten class.

On behalf of National American Miss, I donated hundreds of books and stuffed animals to Goodwill of Charlotte, NC, and Duke Children's Hospital in Durham, NC. Thus far, I have received and attached thank you notes from both of the organizations.

I use my energy, creativity and kindred spirit to inspire, motivate and challenge children to be the absolute best that they can be in all that they do. Charity is a reward that can not be measured but will always be treasured. As so elegantly expressed by Etienne DeGrellet, “I expect to pass through this world but once: any good thing therefore that I can do, any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” It is imperative that we do seize the moment and do something to make our world a better place. It is what Community Spirit is all about.

Joplin Family Worship Center Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
Joplin Family Worship Center

Rachel Landes* - National American Miss Missouri

Total Hours Served* - 6 hours

I was so humbled to have the opportunity to serve the people of my home state who were affected by the devastating tornadoes this summer. I spent the day driving down to Joplin and volunteering my time at the Joplin Family Worship Center with a variety of jobs. I went through boxes of donated clothes and shoes, and I then organized and folded them for the center's huge tent where Joplin residents could come to stock up on basic necessities for free. My sister queens and I also helped prepare meals for their daily "Meals on Wheels." We then went door to door in one of the neighborhoods offering hot meals and water to isolated residents.

Joplin was a hot topic in the news immediately after the tornadoes destroyed most of the city in May. As unbelievable as the video footage and photos were on the news, seeing entire neighborhoods destroyed was incredibly sobering. Not only was I able to help out a struggling and rebuilding town, but I also got a great reminder on remaining thankful for all that I have in my life.

Pennies for Peace Community Involvement!!

Name of Organization or Cause *
Pennies for Peace

Vianne Sarber* - National American Miss Oregon Teen

Total Hours Served* -7.5 hours

The Pennies for Peace program collects pennies for the children of Pakistan and Afghanistan. I LOVE SCHOOL, so when I learned about Pennies for Peace giving kids a chance to go to school, I was excited to help! Did you know that in those countries a penny can buy a pencil and most girls don't go to school? If kids are educated then they grow up in happier communities and that gives the world a better chance for peace! I got the opportunity to collect and count money, design an informational board, make presentations in classrooms about Pennies for Peace, and bake Afghan cookies to serve at a teacher luncheon. There is so much for kids and adults to learn, so check out their website at www.penniesforpeace.org. You can also find photos, facts and how you can get involved with Pennies for Peace in your school or community! PENNIES+LOVE+EDUCATION=PEACE!

Abolish Child Trafficking

Rafieya Husain* - National American Miss Virginia Teen

Total Hours Served* - 62 hours

My visit to the Inova Fairfax Children’s hospital was overwhelming and a day to remember. I have been a patient of the Fairfax hospital a few times over the years and one thing that I always remember was the visit that I got from Santa and his helpers on Christmas day in 2006. The feeling of being in a hospital and being sick was very frightening and seems alone but the happiness and smile they brought to me was remarkable. So now I wanted to share my experiences and my life with the children who were now in the same hospital.

On Oct 20, 2011 I visited the Children’s hospital and met with a group of wonderful kids of different ages. I met with Megan who was full of energy and loved to draw so we spend time drawing together and sharing stories. Marissa was excited to know about my life in the pageant and how it all started. We shared stories and I encourage her to be positive and strong and to believe that she can achieve anything in life. Shonda who was in her room was very quiet but listen to stories that I read to her and she loved her teddy bear. Tina and Anne were fun to spend time with, they enjoyed reading and drawing and I shared my experience with them when I was in the hospital and how scared I was but believing that I will get better and work towards my dreams of becoming a Model.
To see the joy and smiles on each of the children’s faces was the best feeling in the world. I have been in contact with a few of the girls and remain friends. Thank you National America Miss for allowing me to be an advocate for children.
