National American Miss Oregon - Shaving Her Head for Charity

Okay, this is AWESOME!!  National American Miss Oregon, Brittany Thomas, is shaving her head to support the fight for cancer.  Here is the message I received from her this morning:

"I've answered the call to be a hero! I'm having my head shaved to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to raise money to find cures.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Click the link below, "like", then follow the instructions to donate.

Or join the few brave people already signed up and sign up to be a shavee!

People keep asking me why dont you just give money, or volunteer with St. Baldricks.. why shave your head...Anybody can donate a few dollars or donate their time, but I truly believe it takes a strong, confident, determined person to shave their head for a cause!

Want to become a shavee. Go to www.stbaldricks.com now!"

All I can say is, take pictures!! :-)

National American Miss Indiana sings at The Ronald McDonald House

National American Miss Indiana Jr. Pre-Teen Queen, Kaytlayne Poorman, was invited to sing at the Madison Wisconsin Ronald McDonald House banquet on Thursday February 10th at 7:00pm. Kaytlayne's mom e-mailed me and said "she was able to donate beanie babies to the Ronald McDonald House and then sing for the audience. She met Ronald McDonald himself and he even called her a few days later just to tell her how impressed he was with her voice and that she was a very special little girl."

That's pretty cool! Great job Kaytlayne, I'm sure all of the kids at the Ronald McDonald house loved getting to meet Miss Indiana!

At the Superbowl with Miss America

If you ever get a chance to go to the superbowl, it's just one of those things you have to do.  So, here I am, it's my year!  My dear wife is covering the big game in Dallas so naturally, I thought I should be here for "moral support".

While I was in the press ballroom this afternoon, who should walk by? Miss American Teresa Scanlon!  Since she is, after all, a former NAM girl, I had to grab a quick picture in between her radio interviews.

Is National American Miss a Scam?

This is the question I woke up to this morning on a yahoo-answers page:  "Is National American Miss a Scam?"  http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110201101745AAGNtlH

When people ask this question I have two responses; one is to say, really?  Ask around for 5 minutes and you have your answer.  But then I remember that "pageants" have a pretty rough reputation out there these days.....

Thank you..... toddlers and tiaras.
Thank you..... Little Miss Sunshine
Thank you..... Ice storm in Dallas for causing me to miss my flight today (wait, that doesn't have anything to do with this!) Anyone that watches Jimmy Falon gets the thank you humor.  :-)

I can certainly post an answer to the question on Yahoo but it means so much more when contestants or families do.  Of course I know NAM is not a scam, I've been involved in the company for over 20 years.  So to anyone reading, please feel free to take a moment and give your opinion both here on my blog as well as on the Yahoo site:  http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110201101745AAGNtlH

For the record, this is our 28th years in the pageant business.  National American Miss holds events every year in more that 34 states and has more contestants than any other pageant system in the world.  NAM is an accredited members of the BBB and pays out over 1.5 million dollars each year in cash and prizes.  Does everyone win?  Of course not!  That why it is called a competition and not an awards ceremony.  :-)

I spend the last 4 days editing the video from interviews that we shot at our last National Pageant in California.  If you want to hear first hand from some of the contestants and families that were there, check out the interviews, they are all posted here on this blog.  They were all shot in the NAM ballroom either right before a final show while people are starting to sit down or immediately after a final show as people exit.

Enjoy NAM Families and thank you for being a part of this program!
