Following up on our post from a few days ago with National American Miss California, Jada Newkirk, and her goal to be in the Olympics.  She made the local news in her home town and the story is a really good one!  She even works in her actress lines from the pageant - too funny.

This girl has already accomplished some SUPER impressive track and field records - look out, I think we will be watching her as a part of Team USA in the near future.

National American Miss - "Not an Ordinary Beauty Pageant" - from a Judges Perspective

One of the judges at this years National American Miss California Pageant, held up in Santa Clara, CA, is a writer for a magazine called "Parenting on the Peninsula".  If the October issue, click here to read it online, he wrote about his experience at the pageant on page 17.

He talks about what he thought he was walking into when he showed up and NAM and how his experience changed his view on pageants.  Here's a peek at the article, I encourage you to take a minute and read the full article online.

National American Miss California Judges Panel"Every other month, I write articles for POP that address getting or keeping your kids active, and how to keep them active without getting injured in the process. In today’s world, it seems like kids are either very active or not active at all. Kids have so many options to keep them busy; however, like their parents they do not always choose the best activities to stick with. We do live in Silicon Valley, and as such, much of our time is spent on the computer.

I recently came across a new activity that I never thought I would endorse: a pageant for young girls. This is not just any pageant. It is a pageant called National American Miss (NAM). I was invited to be a judge for the Miss California Teen Program for NAM in Santa Clara at the end of July, and honestly, I did it for the business networking. I was not a big fan of pageants, and I thought that all parents who put their kids in pageants were somewhat nuts. I had nightmare images of JonBenét and Patricia Ramsey before I arrived."

How many times have we all heard someone say something like this about NAM?!  I just love bringing people to one of our events and showing them what a positive and powerful experience NAM is for the young ladies that participate.  Thanks Brien for sticking with us and giving NAM a chance to show what pageants can really do for girls!

NAM Queen - Win or Lose, She's Already Beaten the Odds

Gabriella Hines, NAMiss LancasterLANCASTER -- Don't bother telling Gabriella Hines she can't do something.

"I don't take no for an answer," the 20-year-old National American Miss Lancaster said. "You can accomplish anything no matter what your limitations are. Always keep your head held high and stay positive and you'll make it through."
Hines should know.

She compiled an excellent academic record at Lancaster High School, works as a cosmetologist, competes in pageants and lives a normal life despite needing four open heart surgeries after being born with aortic valve stenosis and being given a 10 percent chance to live.

Now, she will compete during Thanksgiving weekend in the National American Miss pageant in Anaheim, Calif., at Disneyland, for the National All-American Queen title.

Whether she wins the title or not, Hines already has beaten the odds.  Read her entire amazing story posted in the Lancaster Gazette

Miss California - Jada Newkirk sets her sights on the Olympics

“She gave it her all the whole day from beginning to end,” Campbell said. “Her goal was to get a medal and she got the medal.”  On July 27, the Newkirks arrived home, delighted not to be in Kansas anymore. On July 30, Jada won a completely different type of pentathlon.

At the 2011 Miss California (North) Pre-Teen Pageant in Santa Clara, Newkirk was awarded best actress, casual wear winner and most promising model while being named fourth runner-up in the photogenic category. There she took the top rung of the podium as she accepted the crown of queen.

Now it’s back to school for the seventh-grader at Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco. Newkirk is running cross country for the school’s team, as well as with Team Onalysis.  The spirited runner needs to keep training in order to attain the ultimate medal.

“I hope to be an Olympic gold medalist in 2020,” Newkirk said. “In long jump and heptathlon.”  Her short-term goal is to be crowned 2011 National Pre-Teen Queen in Anaheim in November.

National American Miss - nothing like reality show "Toddlers and Tiaras"

NAM Illinois Queens donate books to the Bookworm Angels
VERNON HILLS - The reality TV show “Toddlers and Tiaras” is nothing like the pageants three local pageant queens compete in.

While the TV show features children who wear elaborate make-up and hairstyles, none of the three girls who are advancing to compete in the National American Miss Pageant next month are even allowed to wear make up.

“They just want you to be yourself. You are supposed to be yourself,” said Tatum Pearlman, 7.
