Serious Community Service

One of the best awards that we give away here at National American Miss in my opinion is our Golden Achievement Award at Nationals. This award is to recognize the participant with the most outstanding record that year in community service. Check out Brianna Woodside-Gomez, your 2008 Miss Oregon Teen! She went to Nationals last November and took home the Golden Achievement Award with an awesome project for the troops.

A recent article in the Oregon City News said "The Happy Valley girl decided she could do more than just the required four hours of community service – much more.
She spent 60 to 70 hours collecting 600 DVDs to send to the troops overseas, and at the National American Miss Teen competition in November, Woodside-Gomez was given the National Golden Achievement in Service Award.

NAMiss Challenge of the Day

We are getting ready to head for Washington State tomorrow where our new National All-American Pre-Teen Queen, Nicole Renard, will be performing at the Family Expo in Pasco this coming weekend. National American Miss will have a table set up where we will be taking pictures of Nicole with the girls who attend the expo, should be a lot of fun!

In preparing for the expo I have come across a number of great encouragements for young ladies and thought I would share one with you today. I issue this as the "NAMiss Challenge of the Day" for all of the young ladies reading this blog:

"Today, praise people for what they can do, not just how they look. Compliment a friend today on something other than her appearance."

National American Miss tries so hard to promote who you are as opposed to what you look like. Today it's your turn to share the encouragement with your friends!

Miss Indiana Katie Stam is the new Miss America!

She did it!! Our hometown girl from Seymour Indiana, Katie Stam won the super bowl of pageantry last night and is the new Miss America! We couldn't be more excited for her; talking with some of our friends who were there at the pageant sitting in the 5th row, they said is was crazy! Katie had such a huge cheering section that made the trip down to Las Vegas. They told me Katie has been fighting a sore throat most of the week and was nervous about making the cut for talent where she sang "Via Dolorosa."

You will remember from my earlier post that she won the preliminary swimsuit competitions so we knew she had a chance of finishing well, but how about taking the whole thing! During the interview portion of the competition she decried the use of performance-enhancing drugs among professional athletes and discussed the definition of glamour.

"That beauty that you feel on the inside, it's that confidence, that radiance inside of you, that's what glamour is," Stam said. Way to go Katie, great answer and congratulations from everyone here at NAM.

Megan with the three Trump Queens

Happy Thursday everyone, I hope you are having a great week! Things are starting to get busy as we move into our 2009 season of National American Miss. Did you know that this is our 27th year producing pageants? Pretty cool! If you haven't signed up yet, now is the time to get started: www.namiss.com I hope you like the new layout design for the blog, I'm having fun experimenting with some different ideas.

A few weeks back my lovely wife Megan got to do something pretty cool at work - she got to go down to the New York City apartment of the current Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, Miss Teen USA Stevi Perry from Arkansas, and Miss USA Crystle Stewart of Houston, Texas.

The ladies welcomed Megan inside their swanky NYC apartment where they were busy getting ready for the holidays. Miss Teen USA Stevi Perry even whipped up breakfast for Megan! Miss Indiana America Preliminary Winner

The Miss America Pageant is in full swing! Last night was the fist round of preliminary competitions and one of our hometown girls took home the preliminary swimsuit (lifesytle and fitness) award, Katie Stam, Miss Indiana from Seymour, Indiana. Tonight her group moves on to the talent competition where Katie will be singing Via Dolorosa - good luck Katie!
A faithful group of over 100 family and friends will be traveling to Las Vegas to cheer her on this weekend for the finals. I know she has a faithful National American Miss following and will be sure to keep everyone updated!
This year you can be a part of the Miss America vote. The night before the live show, America has the chance to be a judge and select four of the contestants they think deserve to make it into the top 15. NAM Queen supports her pick for Pres!

The biggest news of the day is obviously the swearing in of our 44th President, Barak Obama! Here's some fun pageant news that goes along with the Inauguration.

Miss America Kirsten Haglund will be singing the national anthem at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, a gathering in the National Building Museum that will include President Barack Obama. It's always nice to see a pageant girl on the national stage!

Even more exciting for me though, check out our 2005 National American Miss Junior Pre-Teen queen, Dylan Collins! She performed at the Democratic National Convention. It's exciting to see National American Miss girls of all ages involved in their community and what an honor for a young woman to perform at such a prestigious event. Way to go Dylan; You are proof that National American Miss girls are making a difference every day!
Check out Dylan's myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/dylanjenetcollins.

NAMiss All-American Pre-Teen

Our brand new National All-American Pre-Teen Queen, Nicole Renard, is already hard at work. She works with a group called “Operation Thank You.” They welcome home soldiers and thank them for their dedication. They also send care packages to soldiers. This is a photo of Nicole at a surprise Welcome Home party for Marine Brian Martens.

Nicole also had a party at her church and collected food for the food bank. Her mom, Pam, reports She collected over 80 items. Great job Nicole, way to make a difference; National American Miss is proud of you!
I encourage everyone to take time to get involved! It is not only rewarding but can be a lot of fun too. Have a great day everyone!

NAM contestant headed to Hollywood on American Idol

As I'm sure most of you know, the new season of American Idol is underway! The big question this season, will the new fourth judge be enough to keep viewers interest for another season? The big question for me, will Arianna Afsar, a State Finalist for California NAMiss in 2006, 2007 & 2008 be able to take it all home!

Arianna was our 2006 Jr. Teen and 2008 Teen talent winner for the Southern California NAM program and took home 1st & 3rd runner-up overall in '06 and '07.

Here is a link to the article on the American Idol website: http://americanidol8.net/american-idol-season-8/arianna-afsar-is-going-to-hollywoo/

Way to go Arianna, we will be watching!

Great idea for a low price pageant dress

I saw an article this morning that I thought was fabulous! It was in "The Milford Daily News" in MA. Here is a link to the article: http://www.milforddailynews.com/news/x512382430/Dressed-for-all-seasons

Someone put together an event at the local high school where everyone brought their extra prom style dresses and they sold them for between $20 and $40 each. A great opportunity since all of the girls most likely will be attending a formal in the fall, prom or something similar; but what an amazing opportunity for the pageant crowd!

Here you can find your pageant gown for $40 or less?! Maybe you should set something like this up at your local high school? :-)

Your Emotions Are Contagious

Do you have a project you are passionate about? A goal you are trying to achieve? One of the most important things you can do to help your own cause is to consider the way you are presenting YOURSELF, not the project, to others. Your emotions are contagious!

The first power you can develop is enthusiasm. The more excited you are about accomplishing something that is important to you, the more excited others will be about helping you to do it. The fact is that emotions are contagious. The more passion you have for your life and your activities, the more charisma you will possess, and the more cooperation you will gain from others. Every great man or woman has been totally committed to a noble cause and, as a result, has attracted the support and encouragement of others in many cases, thousands or millions of others. How consistently passionate are you?

A reminder about what we do

Only a few posts ago I put up links to all of last years National Queen's documentary video's; today I want to direct you back again to the video of Heather Zhuang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7lzNO6zYQ8

I have spent the last 24 hours looking through video and pictures from our 2008 events and footage of our contestants and families in different activities at home. Wow! We have so many amazing families here at NAMiss. It is so encouraging to see what our young ladies are doing all across the country.

Heather Zhuang was our 2007-08 National All-American Miss Teen from Illinois. At the end of her video she talks about how NAMiss has effected her life. If you haven't watched her video, take a minute and do so now, the link is up above.

Into the new year!

Happy Thursday everyone! It's almost the end of our first full week in 2009. Today I want everyone that reads this blog to get out and try something new. We all have our new years resolutions (if you haven't written yours down take a minute to do so, it increases the chances of you actually following through!), one of mine is to try new things.

Don't avoid trying a new activity just because you're not good at it. how do you think you get good? By doing it OVER and OVER and OVER again! After all, practice makes perfect.

In fact, if you want to do anything well, you have to be willing to possibly do it poorly at the beginning. Pick something new today that you have been afraid to try in the past because you were worried you might not be very good at it. You don't have to be a superstar; it's O.K. to just be O.K.

Your new activity could be anything from shooting hoops to ice skating to drawing or singing. Find someone else that shares your interest and do it together, it will be fun. Make it a great day everyone and a fabulous 2009!

To our entire National American Miss family, you are already a success in our eyes!
